We are delighted to announce that QCS Cleaning is an approved supplier for the Howden Diaphragm Compressor.
What does that mean you ask? First of all here is a picture of a Howden Diaphragm Compressor.
What is the Howden Diaphragm Compressor Used For?
In short it compresses fluffy hydrogen gas into a liquid so it can be transported and used for fuel. In order to make a hydrogen fuel cell it has to be compressed to over 500 times normal air pressure! Otherwise the fuel tank of a standard hydrogen fueled car would be the size of a four-storey building.
How it Works
Simply put, hydrogen gas goes into the chamber. Oil powered hydraulics push a metal plate (diaphragm) against the gas compressing it until it is a fluid.
Safety Critical Maintenance / Cleaning
Liquid hydrogen is a very powerful fuel – it’s used to lift rockets off the ground and into space. Therefore it goes without saying the machine needs careful monitoring, regular maintenance and cleaning. Compression of gas creates heat which is carefully vented through heat exchangers. These need regular cleaning because any build up of oil or dust can decrease their efficiency and result in potential heat increase and explosion.
As most of these compressors are in outdoor enclosures, the area and machine need to kept free of dust, pollen and standing water.
